Where are you from?
I’m originally from Cali, Colombia. That’s the city where I grew up and started my journey in music. Wrote my first guitar at 11 years old and as a consequence my first song as well! From that point on started singing in different contests and winning first place as the best male singer. In my high school I was part of every music project both with the teachers and the students and after I graduated I had the privilege of winning a festival in my city called “Rockopolis” where I took the first place as the best rock singer in the city in 2011. After that I went on tour for almost 3 years non stop with a cover band called La Rua, at the same time working on my personal project with my band Distraccion. After a couple years I moved to Alexandria, Virginia and started my artistic persona Jhosua Rouge.

Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Juanes, Andres Cepeda, Maroon 5

Tell me about how your creation part begins, and how is your workflow.
I’m a music producer and have been for 12 years now, so it can vary, sometimes I start writing on my guitar, other times it can be a melody stuck in my head or maybe a synth sound hits just right and I let my creativity flow. When I start recording I always make sure to have a catchy melody and a solid rhythm structure and from there I let my ears take me to where it feels good. I’m also in love with vocal arrangements so you can find a lot of that in my music.

Where do you find inspiration?
From everywhere really, personal experiences, things I see on the street, my friends, the world and how it sounds so different everywhere I go.

When is your favorite time of day to create your music?
I’m such a night owl, I find it quite peaceful. I also like to be alone sometimes if I’m working on something very close to me.

Describe how art is essential to society nowadays
It’s always been essential, it is the way we express all kinds of emotions, it’s therapy, it’s magic, it changes society and shapes people’s perception of their own lives. I feel it is one of the only ways we can connect as human beings really.

What motivates you to create?
It’s a sense of urgency for me really, I feel like I’m on this earth to do just that, create and welcome people into different stories. They may be able to relate to what I’m saying or just vibe with music. I like to provide a journey for people to enjoy and escape for a bit.

How do you define success as a music artist?
For me success is all about freedom, to create, to decide, to explore. That along with seeing the hard work reflected in people enjoying the music and sharing it with the world you know?

Does art help you in other areas of your life?
It always has, art has shaped my life in more than one way, It’s how I connect with the world and how I acknowledge what I’m feeling

How do you develop your art skills?
I’m hungry for growth, so I study every day and rehearse almost every day. I also have the blessing of having my own company called MIXIT where I’ve been producing music for artists almost every day for the last 8 years

What is your next move?
I will constantly release music for the next few months, we already have lined up 2 collaborations with great talented artists and plan for a full-length album for next year.

Where will we see you in 5 years?
I’ll be touring the world promoting my latest album.
